Deputies stop wrong way driver near Baytown

A heroic act by Harris County deputies early Tuesday morning could have saved lives. The incident happened on I-10 near Baytown.

A wrong-way driver on East Freeway got into a head-on collision with a Harris County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle early Tuesday morning.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, identified the driver as 23-year-old Nathan Arevalo.

What we know:

According to Sergeant Bondurant, around 1:30 a.m. deputies received multiple calls about a wrong-way driver going eastbound in the westbound main lanes in the 18900 block of East Freeway near North Main in the Highlands-area.

Two Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies are recovering from minor injuries they suffered early Tuesday morning after a wrong-way driver on Interstate 10 crashed into their patrol car near Baytown.

Two deputies in a patrol vehicle arrived at where the driver was and crashed head on with them, authorities say. HCSO officials say the deputies vehicle had their emergency lights on.

Both the deputies and the driver were not seriously injured.

The deputies attempted to render aid to Arevalo and then detained him.

Harris County deputies discuss encounter with wrong way driver

In video provided by the Harris County Sheriff's Office, two deputies, who received minor injuries, talk about their encounter with a wrong-way driver on I-10 early Tuesday morning.

It was determined by Sergeant Bondurant the driver was intoxicated and that's what caused him to be driving the wrong way.

Arevalo was not injured and has been charged with driving while intoxicated. He was booked into Harris County Jail.
