Why do Child Protective Services take Black children at a disproportionate rate compared to white?
In a more than 1-hour long video posted to Instagram, former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado is seen having her newborn child taken by CPS officials in Manatee County, Florida. Reports indicate that it was connected to a previous case opened against her with another child, after she went to the hospital with issues feeding her baby as a result of low breastmilk supply. The now-viral video is bringing up conversations about the rate at which Black children are removed from homes compared to white children. A Houston mother experienced a similar situation, and joined The Factor, along with the attorney that helped her, to talk about the issue.
