Since former President George H.W. Bush's death Friday night, a long line of family members and well-wishers have made their way to the presidential home in west Houston.
Sunday afternoon, we caught up with his grandson Pierce Bush.
“My grandfather lived a very full life, but there's still that sadness that we won’t be able to see that man that we loved and that was always friendly up until the end,” Pierce Bush says.
Pierce Bush describes an understandable roller coaster of emotions since the passing of his grandfather.
Pierce Bush’s father Neil and mother were at the president's side when he died Friday night.
In the hours since, the gate to the Bush's neighborhood has become a place to grieve and pay respects.
Pierce Bush says it's only appropriate that his grandfather be memorialized and remembered here.
“Because he embodied Houston, because he loved the diversity, the food, loved going out to the Texans games, loved being a part of all the great things this city has to offer. It's not a surprise to me that people are coming to the gate, and I think we're going to see a lot of that over the next few days.”
In the days ahead, as the family accompanies the president back to Washington for Wednesday's state funeral and then returning to Houston for a memorial on to the burial at the Presidential Library in College Station, Pierce Bush says the family will find comfort believing the president is in a better place, knowing they are better for their time with him.
“He was always, always, always thinking about other people. Even in his last moments, we would say 'love you Gampy' and he would say 'love you more' which was just so sweet," Pierce Bush says.
