Mineral Wells, Texas, sees severe damage after reported tornado

Severe storms, hail and possible tornado slam North Texas

North Texas was pummeled by severe weather on Tuesday, with buildings in Mineral Wells getting destroyed by a possible tornado, houses in Johnson County experiencing baseball-sized hail, and many other counties experiencing damage and power outages. FOX 4's Dan Henry, Amelia Jones and Peyton Yager recap the evening of storms.

A tornado has been confirmed near Mineral Wells, Texas, not far west of the DFW Metroplex.

Viewers have submitted images and video of severe structure damage possibly caused by the tornado.

What we know:

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was confirmed along Highway 180 about three miles east of Mineral Wells at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. 

According to an official with the City of Mineral Wells, there is a large area of structure damage with some structures destroyed. 

Two people were taken from the scene to be treated for injuries, officials said in a later press conference, and several other minor injuries were treated without need for transport. Watch the full press conference below:

Mineral Wells officials give update on severe weather

Mineral Wells city officials give the latest severe weather update on the possible thunderstorms and tornadoes in the area.

The exact scale of the damage was not known as of Tuesday night, but officials said the general area appeared to start on the northeast side of the Country Club Estates community, and traveled southeast to the National Vietnam War Museum. Google Maps shows those points to be a little less than three miles apart. 

What we don't know:

No reports of fatalities had come in at the time of publishing. No reports have said anyone is missing after the incident.

Resources for those affected

A cafeteria at Mineral Wells High School is open to anyone in the area who now needs a place to stay, officials announced. The American Red Cross is also at the school to assist people in need.

Restrictions:

A curfew of 10 p.m. is being enforced in the area, police say, in order to protect the homes and belongings of those affected by the storm. Neighborhoods that took heavy damage are blocked off to traffic.

Local perspective:

Severe storms began moving through the Metroplex from the northwest Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest impacts set to reach the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the early evening. 

Along with the confirmed tornado, reports of hail, wind damage, and heavy rainfall began flooding in around 5 p.m.
