Houston ISD’s Long Academy was placed in "secure mode" Thursday due to nearby chase that led to an hours-long SWAT standoff, officials say.

Sources reported a SWAT standoff was taking place on Leader Street, which is nearby the campus. A suspect was reportedly barricaded inside a home.

According to authorities, the incident began at 8 a.m. when patrol officers became involved in a pursuit with a vehicle going southbound on Hillcroft Avenue.

The chase lasted about a quarter mile before the suspect made a westbound turn on Bellaire Boulevard and hit a median, causing the vehicle to lose a tire.

Officials said the suspect jumped out of the vehicle with what appeared to be a pistol and ran into a nearby neighborhood. The suspect allegedly jumped over a few fences before breaking into a vacant house for sale.

Law enforcement called in resources such as the SWAT team and a negotiation team to help get the suspect to surrender. They attempted to make verbal contact but the suspect refused.

After four hours, the authorities decided to go inside to get the suspect. He was hiding in the attic when officials found him. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital out of precaution.

According to HPD, the suspect's vehicle was involved in a different pursuit earlier in the day around 4 a.m., but it was decided to discontinue that chase.

Houston police also state there is no threat to Long Academy and everyone is safe. The school remains in secure mode.

What they're saying:

They sent this letter to parents on Thursday morning:

"Jane Long has been notified of police activity outside of the school. As a precaution, we have placed the school in Secure. During the Secure Action, all doors are locked, and no one can leave or enter the building. We assure you that we take all threats seriously as the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. We will share additional information as needed."
