Galveston officer-involved shooting on 55th Street

What we know:

Officials said the shooting occurred near the intersection of Avenue O and 55th Street.

Officials said in a news release that a traffic stop occurred at the intersection around 3:45 p.m.

Backup was then requested by the officer.

Authorities said during the traffic stop the driver, who has been identified as 47-year-old Randy Martin, was asked to step out of the vehicle.

That's when, authorities said, a struggle occurred, and the officer requested the backup to respond more rapidly.

At that point, officials said shots were fired and Martin was struck multiple times by the gunfire.

Police said officers immediately rendered first aid at the scene until Martin was taken by Galveston EMS to the UTMB Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said there was also a passenger in the vehicle. That passenger was taken to the emergency room.

The officer involved in the shooting was uninjured, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing.

What we don't know:

Officials did not state what the traffic stop was for.
