Family wants speed bumps after crashes continue to happen at their SE Houston home
HOUSTON - Can you imagine a car slamming straight into your house? What about different vehicles repeatedly running into your home and your yard, year after year? That isn’t a hypothetical for one Southeast Houston family.
The Robinson family’s house sits where a different street T’s right into their’s and speeding drivers don’t always see the road is ending, causing cars to come crashing right through the Robinson’s property.

Over and over again, cars keep crashing not only into Melody Robinson’s yard, but twice, drivers have ended up inside her home including, "An intoxicated driver ran all the way through my house and I couldn’t even stay in the house because the house was unstable. It was unsafe to go inside," Mrs. Robinson explains.
Her husband even installed a $5,000 barricade in their yard to keep cars from crashing, but now they run into the barrier instead. One vehicle hit the steel poles and the SUV was going so fast, it jump right over the barricade and ended up in their driveway.
"It’s very unsafe for my grandkids to go outside and play," says Mrs. Robinson.
The crashes have happened so much at the Robinson’s Southeast Houston home and at their neighbor’s, they say they've asked the City of Houston several times to install speed bumps before something serious happens.
"That’s my biggest fear that this is going to cause a serious injury or possibly a death," Robinson explains.
MORE CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY
"It is concerning to me because there are safety factors involved. We are inundated with requests. I actually get a lot of calls and requests for speed cushions," says Houston City Council Member Dr. Carolyn Evans Shabazz, who represents Robinson’s district.
Dr. Shabazz says the waitlist for speed bumps actually goes back several years.
"The cost of the speed bumps can range from $50,000 to $100,000. We have to look at the conditions of the street, the immediate safety concerns to make a determination about how we’re going to prioritize these projects."
