Conroe police investigate threatening communications

What we know:

The Conroe Police Department said investigators are working to determine who is responsible for the communications and whether they violated any laws.

According to police, investigators are working with county, state and federal law enforcement agencies to identify the source of the messages, preserve evidence and assess any potential safety concerns.

Police said protective or enforcement measures will be taken if warranted as the investigation continues.

The department emphasized that it recognizes the constitutional rights of people to criticize the government, express their views, petition elected officials, peacefully assemble and participate in the democratic process.

However, police said those protections do not extend to threats of violence.

Police also said elected officials and city employees must be able to perform their duties without facing threats of violence, harassment, intimidation or other unlawful behavior.

The department said reports of that type of conduct will be investigated and addressed based on the evidence and applicable law.

FOX 26 spoke with one city official who received a threat and said the communication was related to the controversy involving Flock cameras.

What they're saying:

"These freedoms are fundamental and will be protected. However, threats of violence will not," the department said in a statement.
