Boy, 15, dies after being struck by train in Texas City

A 15-year-old boy has died after being struck by a train while riding his bike in Texas City, authorities say.

According to police, the teen was hit around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday on a set of railroad tracks along SH 3 near FM 1765.

The teen was taken to the hospital in critical condition and he later died from his injuries.

A Union Pacific spokesperson says neither the conductor or locomotive engineer were injured. The spokesperson says standard operating procedure calls for a drug and alchohol screening of both employees, but police on the scene said there is no indication either employee was impaired.

The investigation has been turned over to Union Pacific police because it happened on railroad property.

The teen was a sophomore at La Marque High School. A Texas City ISD spokesperson says counselors are available on campus for students.
