Worker killed, believed to be trapped under 3 feet of asphalt following industrial accident in South Houston

Authorities are on the scene of a deadly industrial accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. 

What we know:

Officials said the incident occurred near the intersection of Christy Place and Texas Street in the City of South Houston at a location called Martin Asphalt - South Houston. 

According to the Houston Fire Department, a storage tank ruptured and 50,000 gallons of asphalt came out of a storage tank. 

Authorities with the City of South Houston contacted the Houston Fire Department HAZMAT. 

A worker was trapped as a result of the storage tank rupture and later confirmed to be dead. Officials said the person was believed to be buried under three feet of asphalt. 

A source told FOX 26 that the tar was about 210 degrees. 

The Harris County Fire Marshals Office said the Houston Fire Department is currently working to recover the worker who was working at the time of the incident. 

What we don't know:

The victim has not been identified by authorities. 

The investigation is ongoing. 

What they're saying:

Martin Asphalt sent the following statement to FOX 26 on Wednesday, "We are aware of an incident at our South Houston asphalt terminal and are taking the matter very seriously. Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved, and we are ensuring that appropriate care and support are being provided. We have initiated a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and are working to gather all relevant facts. We are also cooperating as appropriate with any applicable authorities. We are not in a position to provide additional details at this time."
