The Houston police chief's latest comments about the Sante Fe school shooting are not sitting well with everyone. The National Rifle Association came out against Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, claiming the chief wants to “hold law abiding gun owners responsible for crimes they don't commit.” A commentator on NRA TV even called Acevedo a "liberal hack".
This is after Acevedo said after the Santa Fe school shooting something needs to be done. He also said gun owners who don't properly secure their weapons should be held accountable, which is already a Texas law on the books. It targets parents who fail to secure and allow their children to get a loaded gun. But the chief said that didn't stop what he calls the “bully” NRA from attacking him and he's standing by with his lawyers.
"He had said and so we've got to make sure that everyone stores them in a responsible manner. Okay. So I ask how. How will you make sure chief?" said an anchor on NRATV.
She continued to say, "And because this particular police chief doesn't believe in our immigration laws, he has no ground on which to stand to lecture millions of law-abiding gun owners about their firearms when they've done nothing wrong. So far, this police chief by swearing an oath to uphold his office and by aiding and abetting those who violate immigration law has broken more laws than I have."
Chief Art Acevedo said, "Not only do they try to bully people, they absolutely take things out of context, they mislead. And I'll be real honest, I'll be watching closely and so are my lawyers. I don't know about other people, but they've got some deep pockets and they got some consequences legally if they start getting a little too crazy. I withhold as an American citizen the right to not have people defame me or try to, most importantly try to evoke a reaction from people that might start harassing individuals like they try to do. Because that's an issues."
One state lawmaker says it’s time Texas takes this issue seriously and it’s time to get to work with a special session of the legislature. On the Factor is State Representative Shawn Thierry.
