HOUSTON, TX - A disturbing new trend is on the rise in the Houston-area. Houston police are now launching a new initiative to combat domestic violence--after 3-deadly incidents over the past four days. Officers are often the first line of defense for victims. Right now, HPD's initiative is slated to identify the most vulnerable people and get them help before it’s too late.
Houston police say yesterday a man killed his wife while she was in the shower, then shot and killed himself. The woman’s 8-yr-old daughter was also hit by one of those bullets and survived. That was the 3rd deadly domestic violence case in 4 days.
Police say on Friday a woman stabbed her 60 year old husband to death and on Thursday police say a man shot and killed his girlfriend. This new initiative is targeting apartment complexes with the highest number of domestic violence calls. Police will pass out information on how victims can get help, and they’ll assess the offenders during calls, to determine how likely they seem to possibly injure or kill their partner.
"Domestic violence happens behind closed doors. It's not like other crimes that we’re aware of happening. This is a different, and we have to think outside the box and become creative."
Officers also want to hold meetings at those complexes, they know a lot of victims don’t feel comfortable coming forward because that can be the most dangerous time for them. They hope they can bridge that gap.
