A man died Saturday evening after a physical altercation at an auto body shop in north Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Fatal fall in Aldine area

What we know:

The incident happened at an auto body shop on Willis Street near the Hardy Toll Road and Aldine Bender Road.

Deputies were called to the business after a verbal argument between two men turned physical, according to investigators. The altercation continued for some time, and witnesses told investigators both men were actively involved in the fight.

One man struck the other, causing him to fall and become unresponsive. Deputies and emergency medical personnel performed life-saving measures before taking him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, but authorities were still working to officially identify him.

The other man involved is in his 20s. Investigators said the two men knew each other and may be related. One was reportedly a customer at the shop, while the other occasionally helped there.

The man who struck the victim remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigators.

Dig deeper:

The cause of death has not been determined. Authorities said an autopsy will examine whether the man died from being struck, hitting his head on the ground or a medical condition that occurred during the altercation.

Investigators recovered surveillance video that reportedly captured the entire incident. Detectives have interviewed witnesses and others who were at the scene.

The case will be handled as a homicide investigation and sent to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for review by a grand jury.

It was not immediately clear whether the man involved in the altercation would face charges. A grand jury will consider whether he could have been criminally responsible, acted in self-defense or whether the fight amounted to mutual combat.
