The Panola-Harrison Electric Co-Op announced it would suspend service to areas along Big Cypress Bayou to avoid short circuits from flooding and power-line arcs that could spark fires.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — President Barack Obama says the encryption versus national security debate won't be settled by taking an "absolutist view" of the situation. Obama says both values are important. But he asks how will government catch child pornographers or disrupt terrorist plots if devices are made so that law enforcement cannot access the data stored on them. Obama commented Friday during a question-and-answer session at the South by Southwest Interactive festival in Austin.
HOUSTON (AP) — Nine students have been hospitalized after their school bus collided with a car in Houston. Authorities say the students were taken to a hospital Friday morning as a precautionary measure and there were no reports of serious injuries. The bus was transporting the students to a high school in west Houston and also to a charter school.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — City officials tired of repeated instances of public urination have OK'd spending $100,000 to install an "industrial-grade" bathroom kiosk in downtown San Antonio. The San Antonio Express-News reports the city council on Thursday approved the installation of the Portland Loo, named for the Oregon city that uses them.
DALLAS (AP) — A rare early map of Texas and another historical document discovered in a box of sheet music purchased for $10 at an Indiana estate auction in the 1980s could sell for as much as $7,000 at auction. Heritage Auctions is offering the items Saturday in Dallas. Crystal Murray says in a Heritage news release she was intrigued by the sheet music because her children took piano lessons at the time. Heritage's Sandra Palomino says the 1853 edition of J. De Cordova's map of Texas appears to have been the copy owned by James M. Manning, the surveyor who made "crucial changes" for the map's 1853 edition. A signature says the map was his. A document showing Manning's military appointment to the rank of corporal will be sold with the map.
HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped 9 this week to 480, a record low. Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Incorporated said Friday that Texas shut down 12 rigs, while Oklahoma closed three this week.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Houston-based Walter Oil and Gas Company has been fined $400,000 for failing to notify the National Response Center following a 2014 hazardous discharge in the Gulf of Mexico near Grand Isle. The Advocate reports the company was charged last year in a one-count bill of information and pleaded guilty in December.
