Former chief's son charged in shooting of his mother

McCulloch County, Texas

Investigators say a Central Texas man has been charged in the weekend slaying of his mother.

The McCulloch County Sheriff's Office says 32-year-old Stephen Charles Derrick of Brady was being held Monday on a murder charge, with bond at $750,000. Jail records didn't list an attorney to speak for Derrick, who was arrested following Saturday's death of his mother, Mary Derrick.

Deputy Gina Ramsey said the victim's age was not being released.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting. Ramsey says the investigation continues into what happened at the family's home in Brady. Mary Derrick died at a hospital.

Ramsey says the suspect is the son of late former Brady police Chief Charlie Derrick. The victim was the ex-police chief's widow.

Brady is 120 miles northwest of Austin.
