The hunt is on for an arsonist who set fire to an apartment in east Harris County, forcing the family to jump out the window to escape the flames.
The fire happened just before 4 a.m. Saturday at the Pines of Woodforest Apartments on Uvalde Road.
The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire that consumed Tasha Coleman's apartment in a matter of minutes.
Tasha says she was awakened that morning by the fire alarm.
"When I walked in the living room, the front door--the bottom portion of my door is on fire," said Tasha.
Fire investigators say it appears someone lit the fire between the door and the window at the front entrance to the apartment.
Tasha says she quickly realized the only way to survive was through the back window.
"I start breaking the window with my hand," said Tasha. "I got cuts from breaking the window."
Meanwhile the neighbor across the lawn heard the commotion.
"I kept hearing glass busting out the windows," said Felicia Hawkins. "And the lady was hollering, 'Ma'am, please help me. Please help me.'"
With Tasha's two small children and brother with her in the apartment, it was time to jump.
"I'm like, forget it," said Tasha. "I'm jumping first so I'll be able to catch my kids. So I jumped first. My brother dropped my son and my daughter with the attempt of me catching. Thank God that [I] caught them, and he jumped last."
Felicia then ran to wake up other neighbors as the smoke spread to other apartments.
"If it wasn't for Miss Hawkins, we would have died, quite simply, because smoke detectors wasn't working at all," said LaTrinda Davis who lives in Tasha's complex.
This Thanksgiving, Tasha is hoping for answers but still counting her blessings.
"We're still gonna eat, or whatever, and spend time with family, but it's just different," said Tasha. "We're just thankful to be alive."
