Brenda Fricker dies: Oscar winner and 'Home Alone 2' actress was 81

Brenda Fricker, the Irish actress who won an Academy Award for her role in the 1989 film "My Left Foot" and played the "pigeon lady" in "Home Alone 2," has died. 

She was 81 years old.

A cause of death has not been released.

The backstory:

Fricker was born in Dublin, Ireland, and got her start in acting with roles in the theater and on Ireland’s first soap opera in the 1960s. 

In the U.S., she won an Oscar for best supporting actress in 1990 for her role in "My Left Foot" with Daniel Day-Lewis. She beat Julia Roberts and Anjelica Huston when she won the Oscar. Day-Lewis also won an Academy Award for "My Left Foot," based on the true story of an Irish man born with cerebral palsy. 

Fricker was also known for her role as the Central Park "pigeon lady" who became friends with Kevin McCallister in "Home Alone 2." She also starred in 1994’s "Angels in the Outfield" with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Danny Glover.
