More than 300,000 people are expected to line the streets of Houston for the 31st Art Car Parade on Saturday, April 14.

What began as a small group of people looking to express themselves in the 80’s, has turned into quite the display of over 250 cars decked out in art.

“Well this came out really good," said George Hixson who helped transform a Dodge van into a piece of art, resembling a skull. "We had this Dodge van we stripped down and you know using rebar," said Hixson.

"The other side is mostly dogs and cats or dogs," said Jakilee when describing the truck she has driven in the parade for the last 16 years. "I don’t have cats this year."

Each art car having some sort of meaning or message.

"Started off with save the animals, stop animal cruelty with the dogs and cats, spayed and neuter," said Jakilee.

“You know, Houston and everybody has a car and it’s a car culture," said Hixson.

But more than just cars will be riding the streets of H-town these next few days.

“Well anything that’s on wheels is defined as an art car. So we allow skater groups, bike groups, anything that has been morphed out of an automobile; golf carts, go-carts, things like that," said Jonathan Beitler with Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts.

Also allowed... superheroes raised by water strider bugs.

“He can actually street stride over the water without sinking. It’s a long story," said David Lowy who will be dressed as Striderman; an original superhero with an original story that Lowy is eager to share.

"There are many stories to be told right where we are living," said Lowy.
