ALVIN. Texas - Summer break arrived a few days early for some Alvin ISD students after storms caused water damage to the inside of the building.
What we know:
Wilder and Marek Elementaries will reportedly not be having classes due to significant water damage.
Students at both campuses were originally scheduled to attend classes through Friday.
Extensive Campus Damage
The strong line of severe weather caused significant structural damage to both school buildings. Inside the campuses, the most severe impacts were seen in:
- The campus libraries
- Multiple classrooms
- Main hallways
Despite the sudden closures, district officials say they acted quickly to ensure student safety.
"As soon as we started realizing how extensive the damage was, we went into action, notified parents immediately, and started what we needed to do to get this school back up and running," Renae Rives, Alvin ISD Chief Communications Officer said. "There were a few students that were coming and we had staff that were here to greet them and let them know, we did get the word out, but there's always someone that may not get, you know, the notification, but we did get the word out."
"We also had a couple of kids on the bus already, so we took them to our reunification spot, and we got them back with their parents, and everything is good with that."
The Timeline to Reopen
While the school year is cut short for these students, the district is already looking ahead.
Officials stated that cleanup and restoration efforts are beginning immediately, with plans to have both Marek Burks and Wilder Elementary fully repaired and ready to welcome students back when the new school year begins in mid-August 2026.
