HOUSTON (FOX 26) - The Curiosity Cruiser is on a mission to unlock the power of reading for children all over the Houston area.
The mobile library is filled with books and activities that they take to communities, apartment complexes and schools across the area.
"We take it all around Harris County, all the way up from Humble to Katy to Tomball to Clear Lake," says Bryan Kratish with the Harris County Public Library. "We're going to provide programming for kids. We're going to give them STEM programming such as robotics and coding. Every time they come onboard, we're going to have them leave with a free book they get to use to start their own home library. Our biggest goal is to make sure every child has a book when they're done and have their own home library to read. We want to unlock the power of reading."
The Curiosity Cruiser was inspired by former First Lady Barbara Bush's passion for reading and promoting literacy.
"The vehicle itself was donated by the Ladies for Literacy Guild with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation," Kratish says. "They donated it to the Harris County Public Library. So the Harris County Public Library maintains and does all the programming, and the foundation helps to provide all the materials that we give to the kids when they come on board."
