The Crystal Blue is BACK! Clear water returns to Galveston Island beaches

Did you catch the crystal blue water in Galveston near Memorial Day around the first of June?  If not, you're in for the rare sight again as people are reporting gorgeous blue water shimmering off of the coast of Galveston this week.

"When we get a current from the east, the winds drive it," said Captain Tony Pryer with the Galveston Island Beach Patrol. He's been patrolling the Galveston beaches for more than 20 years.

Meanwhile the Rowland's, who are visiting from Dallas, say the Galveston water is the clearest they've ever seen it. Galveston has been their getaway for around 10 years.

"This is the cleanest that we've ever seen it," said Traci Rowland. "We were down here 10 days ago and the water wasn't like this."

It's true these gorgeous greens and beautiful blues move in on occasion, it's just less common in the summer. When it happened around Memorial Day, the visitors flocked.

"Increased revenues along our parks and the seawall parking, it spiked," said Mary Beth Bassett, Public Affairs Manager of Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. "It went up 108%.

Hotels, according to Bassett, also saw an increase in occupancy immediately following Memorial Day.
