Houston woman relives Las Vegas shooting

Sunday, October 1, Marlena Hedine and her friends were attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. The lineup included a performance from county music star Jason Aldean.

"I mean even Jason Aldean was still on stage playing even with the shooting because nobody knew what it was for a while until we started realizing that people were going down around us," says Hedine.

The group were just feet away from the stage when they heard shots ring out over the crowd. At first they weren't sure what it was, but then the sound came through more clearly. They were bullets flying into the crowd.

"We heard the shot and then shot shot shot shot shot and then it would stop for a minute and I kept hearing the pattern and looking around and seeing people falling and said we can't stay here, we all realized we have to do something. We did have one friend that was in our group that did get shot that ended up in the hospital, she got shot in the chest but luckily she is okay," says Hedine. That friend was shot in the chest, had surgery shortly after and is currently in the ICU.

She decided to take cover under the stage near a concrete wall. At one point the group ran to leave and a friend had to let her jump over the tall fence surrounding the venue. Hedine was able to seek shelter at a nearby hotel, but says the whole time this was going on, she was thinking of her two children.

"I guess when you have experiences where you don't know if you're going to make it, which I never have before until now, the first thing that came into my mind was them and that I didn't want to not be there," says Hedine.
