KATY, Texas (FOX 26) -
Mormon Helping Hands, with FOX 26 News Chief Meteorologist Dr. Jim Siebert serving as crew chief, visited the Canyon Gate residential community in Katy where many homes are still being repaired after Hurricane Harvey.
600 volunteers worked throughout the neighborhood laying sod, fixing fences, spreading mulch and other assisting in other outdoor repairs.
With the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey approaching, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have decided to come together and assist the survivors trying to rebuild their homes.
Over several weekends following Hurricane Harvey, more than 16,000 Mormon Helping Hands volunteers were working throughout the Houston area. The volunteers came from 200 Mormon congregations in the flooded areas.
More than 1 million hours of service were provided to affected residents.
Hygiene kits and food were collected and sorted for use by Katy Christian Ministries.
