Houston is one of the least affordable areas in the U.S. for low income renters

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - According to a report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Texas has fewer affordable units per 100 households for people of extremely low income than the country as a whole. The national average is 37 homes per 100 extremely low income renters. Houston only has 19 homes for that demographic.

"We really haven't been providing for our most vulnerable residents in Houston for decades," says Houston's Director of Housing and Community Development, Tom McCasland.

Hurricane Harvey caused chaos in Houston, but over a year later, an unexpected benefit is arising.

"Despite the damage, Harvey did provide us with an opportunity. The $1.3 billion coming in is an opportunity to really change the narrative for Houston and ensure that we have both affordable homeownership and affordable rental sites in the long run."

A new program called the Community Land Trust, can make homes as affordable as $70,000 for a starter home. It provides many for the opportunity to reduce their rent and build equity into a home.

"It's ultimately about providing stability. They're always searching for the next lowest rent. $100 less on rent makes a huge difference."
