Was That Fake? - IRL & sex trafficking

Was That Fake?

Mary Garcia checked in with the FOX 26 Houston Facebook page and asked about a text message and whether it's a sex trafficking trick. She shared a post with a screenshot where an unknown number says, "Someone's complimented you! See more on here." It has what appears to be links to download an app, but the caption says, "It's a sex trafficking site that puts a tracker on your phone."

Those are links to an app called IRL, a popular app designed to get teens to invite each other to hang out in real life. Claims of sex trafficking ties are unsubstantiated. The company has said the message is generated when someone who uses the app either invites you to join or gives you a compliment. That said, it's not a bad instinct to be skeptical of links sent from numbers you don't know.

Was That Fake?

Rapper Snoop Dogg shared a picture of a house that was burned down. The post got a quarter million likes on it. It appears to be a screenshot of a news article about someone accidently doing burning the home after trying to burn the NIKE apparel in protest of Colin Kaepernick. The first thing to notice is the supposed USA Today headline at the bottom. The font is not what is used by the publication. There are multiple versions of the story circulating but yes, it is fake.
