Remembering the life of Metro officer, Elias "Sonny" Martinez Jr.

A 25-year veteran of the Metro Police Department, Senior police officer Elias "Sonny" Martinez will be laid to rest Tuesday morning. His funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. 

"Our hearts are heavy following the loss of Officer Elias "Sonny" Martinez.  He  was a 25-year METRO Police Department veteran in the Motor Unit.  He was a special public servant and will be missed," said METRO Police Chief Vera Bumpers. 

Martinez died Sept. 17 from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash in League City. Authorities say he was escorting permitted loads on the Gulf Freeway on Sept. 8. He was reportedly passing the trucks in a the escorted convoy when he laid his motorcycle down in a attempt to avoid a collision. He struck the rear of one of the trucks, causing him to suffer severe injuries.

Officer Martinez is survived by his wife and two children.  “He was a special public servant and an extraordinary police officer. He will be missed by many," Metro officials said.

All Metro police officers will attend the public memorial service celebrating the life of Senior Police Officer Elias "Sonny" Martinez, Jr..  The service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart 1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, TX 77002. The public is invited. Officers from Dallas Area Rapid Transit will be in town to cover patrols and other duties while MPD officers attend the funeral.
