Punished student to be honored with Peacemaker Award
A study in late 2018 from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights showed that black students in the Fort Bend Independent School District are disproportionately disciplined.
The six-year investigation says black students in Fort Bend ISD were six times more likely to receive out-of-school suspensions than white students and four times as likely to be placed on in-school suspensions. When FOX 26 News first reported this, Fort Bend ISD Superintendent Charles Dupre said the district was working on the matter and was aiming programs at preventing poor behavior rather than punishing it.
One honor student says she was wrongly and excessively punished by Fort Bend ISD principals for "disruptive behavior" when she intervened to stop another student from being injured on campus. The Honey Brown Hope Foundation will present that student with the Peacekeeper Award for her effort to bring about peace among peers.
Cristal Mason, the mother of the student who will be awarded, and Tammie Lang Campbell, activist and founder of the foundation, discuss the girl's experience with Isiah Carey.
