Bellaire students react to Florida school shooting

It's been just a few days since the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and it's still on everyone's minds.

Hakim Nasir says, "at first I didn't really believe it and it was sad because that could happen to anyone".

"It's a sad case but I think the only thing you can really do is like pray that their heart heals", says Maia Jackson.

Students all across the country are thinking about what they say needs to be changed to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Talking about everything from gun control to metal detectors.

"I wish that we had better policies and better security at schools", says Brianna Moritz.

Jakouri Jones says, "metal detectors I would like to see that".

"I think that we need to have stricter gun control laws so like a 19-year-old shouldn't be able to like have access to guns and have and be able to go to school and be able to have that impact on that school", says Serena Hou.

Austin Rojas says, "if you're mad and you get expelled for something you shouldn't take it out on other people you know those are kids lives right there that's messed up".

Overall thought students at Bellaire High School said they were thinking about the students and staff impacted by what happened. They also say at their school they feel safe with multiple security guards and teachers that have trained them what to do in an active shooter situation.

"We have and we know what to do we have that knowledge of what to do because of experience with lock downs and stuff, just to know what to do if something happens, we also have security so yeah it's just like the fact that we know that this happens is just kind of nerve-racking but knowing that the school is ok calms you down", says Hou.

"I feel safe when I come here because if there's a threat then we're good because the cops are really good here", says Nasir.

Jones says, "it's just sad how we can't go to school and just learn and get knowledge you know how we have to be afraid to go to school because someone is going to shoot up the school you know it's just very sad".
