Effects of Donald Trump's presidency on small business owners

Some economists say voters went to the polls with their wallets in mind, and they say many Americans believe Donald Trump will be better for the economy.  We spoke with a couple of Houston small business owners to get their take on how Trump's win will affect them.

For 18 years, Rusk Elatassi's company River Oaks Goodyear has been in Houston servicing vehicles and selling tires.  So how does this small business owner feel about Donald Trump's win?

"I'd have to say honestly it's disturbing,” explains Elatassi. He says he feels uncertainty and instability come along with Trump being elected.

"I also sell some products that are mined and produced overseas and part of his platform was to tear up some of the trade agreements that have been established,” says Elatassi.

Elatassi's parents migrated to the U.S. when he was two years old.  He says he believes the President elect's plans for immigration reform are bad for businesses and the country.

“It's counter intuitive for the 21st century,” Elatassi said. “It’s the wrong direction for this country. Immigrants built this country.”

Trump is proposing tax cuts for business owners.  "Statistics have proven trickle-down economics does not work.  It’s been tried over and over,” says Elatassi.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what our new commander-in-chief has for America,” said Julia Hogan-McNeil, owner of Julia Cook's Organic Food Truck.  “The people have spoken.  We have to respect leadership.  We don't know what he's going to do.  We don't have a political background to compare him to because he's a businessman.”

"Being in business for myself it has its ups and downs,” said Hogan-McNeil. “He says there are tax privileges that are going to be available for business owners like myself.  I'm looking forward to that. The country is a little divided right now.  I would like to see us all come together in peace".
