"Pay to Play" practice will not be on the ballot in November
Recycling contracts, airport concessions, engineering deals, strip club regulation, and even hurricane recovery legal services - throughout much of his term, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has drawn allegations of "pay-to-play" practices.
Political opponent Bill King helped launch a ballot initiative to essentially ban those who do business with the City from dumping cash into the campaign war chests of council members and the Mayor.
But after a month-long effort, the drive failed to gather the 40,000 signatures needed to get the measure on the November ballot.Read the full article
Shoppers boycott Home Depot over donations to Trump's campaign
Some shoppers are boycotting Home Depot because one of the store's co-founders, Bernie Marcus, plans to donate to President Trump's reelection campaign.
He retired from Home Depot in 2002 and the retailer says he isn't speaking on behalf of the company. However, people are taking to social media anyway, using #BoycottHomeDepot and urging others not to shop there.

Billionaire Tom Steyer launches 2020 campaign after saying he wouldn't
WASHINGTON (AP) - Tom Steyer, the billionaire investor and activist, said Tuesday he's joining the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, reversing course after deciding earlier this year that he would forgo a run.
Steyer, 62, is one of the most visible and deep-pocketed liberals advocating for President Donald Trump's impeachment. He surprised many Democrats in January when he traveled to Iowa, home to the nation's first presidential caucus, to declare that he would focus entirely on the impeachment effort instead of seeking the White House.
Since then, Steyer, of California, has said he's grown frustrated at the pace at which the Democratic-controlled House is approaching Trump. Roughly half of the Democratic presidential contenders, seeking to appeal to the party's progressive base, have called on House Democrats to start an impeachment inquiry. But Speaker Nancy Pelosi has resisted, warning that Democrats need to collect the facts and that a rush to impeachment could ultimately help Trump politically.Read the full article
