TxDOT: 'Left lane on a divided highway is a PASSING lane'

The Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that the left lane on a divided highway is for passing and impeding traffic could result in a $200 fine.

"We've heard many of you didn't know: The left lane on a divided highway is a PASSING lane. After you pass someone, move into the right lane so you don't hold up traffic. Impeding the flow of traffic by continuing to drive in the left lane is punishable by a fine of up to $200," TxDOT wrote on Twitter.

The TxDOT website says signs on Texas multi-lane highways that read "Left Lane for Passing Only," mean the left lane on a divided highway is a passing lane, not a "fast" lane.

TxDOT advises drivers to move into the right lane once they have safely cleared the vehicle they are passing.
