Car hits man in wheelchair in North Dallas

A suspected drunk driver hit a wheelchair bound man early Thursday morning, sending him to the hospital with serious injuries.

45-year-old John Carter was on his way home from dinner and drinks around 2:16 a.m. when he headed towards the Belt Line Village shopping center near Preston and Belt Line Road. Carter is wheelchair bound and has no arms and legs.

Police say he was hit a car going southbound. The car then hit a tree and utility pole before flipping over. The driver, 31-year-old Jonathan Neal was arrested on suspicion of DWI.

Records show Neal has a criminal history. He has been arrested on drug charges in several different counties across North Texas.

Carter shared this picture of him at Presbyterian hospital as he recovers from broken ribs & lacerations. What's worse---His prosthetic legs valued at 10-thousand dollars were crushed. His 25-thousand dollar motorized wheelchair, which doctors believed absorbed the brunt of the crash & may have saved Carter's life, was also destroyed.
