Texans' Mercilus wins AFC Defensive Player of the Month

On Thursday, Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month.

Mercilus is coming off a huge game to end the regular season. This past Sunday, against the Jaguars, Mercilus had five tackles, three-and-a-half sacks, three quarterback hits, two tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and a fumble forced.

For the month of December, in five games, Mercilus totaled 17 tackles (10 solo), five-and-a-half sacks, seven quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pass defensed.

This is the first time Mercilus has won the monthly award and the 13th time a Houston Texan has become a Player of the Month.
