Dr. Charles McClelland, Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, has been selected to serve a five-year term on the prestigious and powerful NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Committee.
McClelland’s term on the committee begins Sept. 1, 2019.
He is the first SWAC representative to be given a full term on the committee in the history of the conference.
Former SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowles was on the committee for one year, 2005-2006.
The NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Committee is responsible for the 68-team field for the NCAA Basketball Tournament, including seeding and completing the brackets.
“It’s mind-blowing to me personally to be selected to be on the Division 1 Men’s Basketball Committee,” McClelland said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. “This is the most prestigious NCAA committee that’s responsible for Division 1 basketball in the tournament.
“For me to have the ability to represent the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the 10-member institutions is tremendous, one that I cannot put into words.”
Dr. McClelland is the former athletics director at Prairie View A&M (2001-2008) and former vice president for athletics at Texas Southern (2008-2018).
“I am just honored that the NCAA had enough confidence in me to allow me to serve on the Men’s Division 1 Basketball Committee,” Dr. McClelland said.
“It says the Southwestern Athletic Conference has a seat at the table and we have some say-so in Division 1 men’s basketball.
“It says the Southwestern Athletic Conference is strong. It says the Southwestern Athletic Conference is vibrant, and we’re moving forward to solidifying ourselves as being a major player in intercollegiate athletics.”
