The Rice Owls search for a new head football coach has zeroed in on Stanford assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren, according to college football sources.
The sources indicate an announcement from Rice director of athletics Joe Karlgaard is expected later today.
Bloomgren, a graduate of Florida State, has been with Stanford since 2011.
He was the Cardinal’s offensive line coach (2011-12), added the title of offensive coordinator in 2013, and associate head coach in 2014.
Prior to joining Stanford Bloomgren was with the New York Jets from 2007-2010.
With the Jets he was offensive quality control (2007-08), offensive assistant (2009) and assistant offensive coordinator (2010).
Bloomgren began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alabama from 1999-2001.
After that he was the co-offensive coordinator at Catawba College (2002-04) and offensive coordinator at Delta (2005-06).
Among the coaches Bloomgren has worked for include Dennis Franchione, Bobby Bowden and Rex Ryan.
Karlgaard and Bloomgren worked together at Stanford, where Karlgaard was the school’s senior associate athletics director for development before he came to Rice.
Bloomgren will replace David Bailiff who was fired last month.
Karlgaard has not been available for comment.
