Greater Houston Honda Dealers Player of the Year - Eric Schmid

- One high school football team from the Houston area will be playing for a state championship and that will be The Woodlands Highlanders, led by quarterback Eric Schmid, named the Greater Houston Honda Dealers Player of the Year for 2016.

Throughout the 2016 season, Schmid has thrown for more than 3,000 yards and rushed for more than 1,000, leading his Highlanders to an undefeated 14-0 record. His team is scheduled to face the Lake Travis Cavaliers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington at 8 p.m. Saturday.

"I never expected something like this to happen this year, so actually doing it is pretty sweet," said Schmid in an interview with FOX 26 News.

"Our team has been really really playing well all season long," said Highlanders head coach Mark Schmid, who is also Eric's father. "It's a great group of kids. They have a great chemistry. They enjoy playing together. They support one another and it's been a lot of fun to coach this team."

"After last year's season and the number of players we had coming back at key points, yeah, we expected to be good," said The Woodlands High School Principal Gregg Colschen.

As part of the Player of the Year honor, Mike Collins presented Eric with a $3,000 scholarship on behalf of the Greater Houston Honda Dealers.
