Houston Dynamo co-owner Gabriel Brener is on the verge of becoming the new majority owner of the franchise according to Major League Soccer sources.

Brener, who owns 25 per cent of the franchise, is in the process of joining with two other investors to buy out current majority owner Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns 50 per cent.

Former boxing great Oscar de la Hoya owns the remaining 25 per cent.

If the transaction is completed MLS sources told FOX 26 Sports Brener, a Los Angeles businessman, is in position to purchase enough of AEG’s stake to gain controlling interest in the club.

One of the two new investors joining the Dynamo ownership group is based in Houston.

They have not been identified.

MLS commissioner Don Garber told FOX 26 four years ago he wanted AEG to sell its stake in the Dynamo because the company also owns the L.A. Galaxy.

Three years ago Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander was close to buying the Dynamo before the transaction fell through.

As part of the proposed transaction Brener would also control the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The Dynamo own the Dash.

Dynamo president Chris Canetti could not be reached for comment.
