Former Texans TE James Casey hired by UH football

- The University of Houston is adding James Casey to its football staff as an offensive analyst.

Casey was a star at Rice University before playing seven years in the NFL as a tight end and fullback. He spent four of those seasons with the Texans.

"I'm trying to transition to coaching," Casey told FOX 26 Sports. "I really want to do it. Obviously, I think very, very highly of Coach (Tom) Herman. I'm just real, real appreciative. I know how competitive the coaching world is. For him to give me an opportunity, I'm real excited and ready to get started. I know just because I played, it definitely does not mean I know how to coach. I'm ready to learn."

Casey and Herman's relationship goes back to their days at Rice, when Herman was the Owls' offensive coordinator.

“Just one of my top two or three players of all-time I’ve ever coached,” Herman said. “He wants to get into the business. You’re not going to find a harder working guy in America than James Casey.”
