Sports Authority approves potential sale of Dynamo to Brener

- The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority voted on Wednesday to approve the proposed sale that would transfer majority ownership in the Houston Dynamo from Anschutz Entertainment group to Gabriel Brener.

Brener, a Los Angeles businessman, already owns 25 percent of the Dynamo, and with the acquisition by his group, Brener would become the majority owner.

AEG currently owns 50 percent, while former boxing great Oscar de La Hoya owns 25 percent.

“We’re the owners and landlords of the building (BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo home), and so in order for them to have an ownership change they have to come get our approval as their landlord, and we’re delighted to do that,” said Kenny Friedman, chairman of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

“We think the new ownership is going to be terrific for the Dynamo going forward.”

The proposed sale also includes the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The Dynamo own the Dash.

According to the Sports Authority jojning Brener in purchasing AEG's 50 percent are Houstonian Ben A. Guill, managing partner of White Deer Energy, and private investor Jake Silverstein.

Dynamo president Chris Canetti spoke to the Sports Authority about the potential sale.

“What just happened is that an important step in the process of transfer of ownership took place, and the Sports Authority giving consent for the ownership change to take place, should in fact that happen over the next few weeks.”

While Canetti points out transfer of majority ownership from AEG to Gabriel Brener is not complete, he said should that happen it will be a positive for the organization.

“Gabriel Brener would be a great owner, operator of the Dynamo,” Canetti said. “He’s been with us since 2008. He’s been very engaged with the team. He cares passionately about winning. He cares about building the a base. He cares about giving back to the community.

“If in fact this deal goes through, I think there’s a lot of comfort in that Gabriel would be a great owner.”
