HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Former Rice Owls star Paul Janish, who has played in 14 games for the Baltimore Orioles during the 2017 season, is expected to join the Owls staff, according to Major League Baseball sources.
Janish, who played high school baseball at Cy Creek, was one of the captains and the shortstop on the Owls team that won the College World Series in 2003.
A fifth-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2004, Janish played for the Reds from 2008-2011, and with the Atlanta Braves (2012-13) and the Baltimore Orioles (2015-17).
Janish is currently on the roster of Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization.
In 9 years in the Major Leagues, Janish has played in 473 games and hit .212, with seven home runs and 87 RBIs.
He was on the Reds postseason roster in 2010 and the Braves playoff roster in 2013.
According to MLB sources, Janish is expected to join Rice coach Wayne Graham’s staff following the 2017 season.
