Sources: J.J. Watt has back surgery

- Houston Texans All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt underwent back surgery on Thursday according to NFL sources.

The surgery is expected to end Watt’s season.

The Texans placed Watt, the NFL's three-time Defensive Player of the Year, on injured reserve on Wednesday, but have yet to indicate if they believe his season is over.

Watt re-injured the same disc in his back that forced him to have surgery in July, which caused him to miss training camp and all of the preseason.

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien told the media on Wednesday Watt did everything the right way while returning to action, passing all of the necessary medical tests.

O’Brien said then he was not sure when Watt re-injured his back.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news on Watt’s surgery.
