Manvel football looking to bounce back

Could the Week 1 loss to Westfield have been a blessing?

- Manvel's football team is ready to bounce back after a tough season-opening loss.

Plenty was and still is expected from this year's Mavericks, who have over a dozen athletes with Division I college football scholarship offers. However, they lost last week to a talented group from Westfield.

But leading up to this week's matchup with North Shore, that loss could be seen as a blessing in disguise.

"Had we won that game and still had all those mistakes, I don't know if that would've helped us," Manvel head coach Kirk Martin said. "I don't think I'll ever say losing is good, but certainly, we were much more focused (this week) and really, I think we got more buy-in from our constructive criticism."

This difference was noticed by the players too.

"It feels a lot different," said Manvel safety Deontay Anderson, who happens to be one of the area's elite recruits. "We're focused more on details now. We've been focused on details, but it's like now we're really, really focusing in on details."

North Shore is one of the area's traditional powerhouses. Week Two's matchup between the two schools will certainly be one of the key high school games to watch.
