$105 million plan to renovate Astrodome passes

- The Harris County Commissioners approved a $105 million renovation of the Astrodome Tuesday.

The vote was 5-0.

In the renovations they will raise the dome floor up two levels, creating a parking garage with 1,400 more parking spaces.

It also opens the “Eighth Wonder of the World” to potential renters. The rest of the facility could be transformed into a space for festivals and conferences.

The Astrodome has been vacant over a decade.

This historic "Dome" was opened in the '60's and touted as the 8th Wonder of the World.

The Houston Oilers called the Astrodome home for 28 years, and now the building is in disrepair. It was declared unfit for occupancy in 2009.

County commissioners approved $10 million to design parking space under the dome’s floor last fall.
