Thousands of drivers get TxTag invoices in error

TxDOT is apologizing for what it describes as an inconvenience thousands of its toll customers are now experiencing.

One of those inconvenienced customers is Fox26 legal expert Chris Tritico. Tritico says he got nothing but a busy signal when he tried to call The TxTag number more than 20 times in two days.

Like thousands of other drivers he got an invoice from TXTag.

"Alleging that I went through three tolls without a tag and I have an EZTag," Tritico said.

"That's the frustrating thing. There's really only two ways you can contact TxTag. One is through email, or calling them directly," said Micah Goodman.

Like Tritico, Goodman says all his attempts to call TxTag ended in frustration.

"I just got a busy signal over and over," Goodman said.

So how does someone with an EZTag end up with toll violations?

After a Facebook posting about the TxTag invoice, Tritico found he was far from alone.

"I've gotten 60 or 70 responses many of them people who are having the exact same problem with TxTag not reading their EZTags and not being able to get through to resolve the issue."

Several thousand EZTag users are getting false invoices. TxDot blames a delay in transferring account information between EZTag, TxTag, and Tolltag.

The toll authorities are partnering so EZTags can be used in other states. But now thousands of customers are getting pay by mail invoices and violations in error.

"You should not pay the state one penny more than you owe them for their bureaucratic mistake," Tritico said.

So what should you do if you've gotten one of these invoices? TXDot says call the agency with which you established your TxTag TollTag or EZTag account. Your home tag agency will file a dispute on your behalf.
