Things to know this hurricane season

Did you know? We never technically got hit by Hurricane Harvey. Our flooding was all from the rain bands, making what happened to Houston technically a “rain event”. Office of Emergency Management leaders want you to remember that every storm is different, and that a true hurricane will impact us much differently than Harvey’s flooding.

Did you know? There's now a website where you can see real time updates on rainfall amounts, waterway flooding, and water levels across Harris County. Click here to view it. The Office of Emergency Management is working on lots of new technology that will allow you to create custom alerts for waterways or areas you're worried about.

Did you know? You can pre-register to volunteer in a time of emergency. Volunteer Houston is now partnered with the city to let people know where help is needed, and how to get involved. You just have to sign up. You can also join CERT – the Community Emergency Response Team. Most of their training is done for the year, but those who took part are now qualified to do thinks like help their neighbors in a crisis, or assist in damage assessment during a disaster. It's free for anyone 18 and up.
