First and only on the Factor, we've learned it may be a dark Christmas for a group of employees at the Houston Independent School District.
Union officials of support workers say notices have gone out, and that Christmas bonus/incentive many of the lowest paid school employees thought they were going to get simply isn't coming this year. It’s quite a blow if you planned your holiday around it.
To break this all down and tell us exactly who at HISD is affected, we have Hector Mireles, president of Texas Support Personnel Employees Local 1, vice president Daisy Lozano, and Matilde Yapan, an HISD employee affected by this decision.
HISD released this statement:
After careful consideration and discussion, the program was suspended for this award period. Unfortunately, the delayed start of school reduced the number of work days, shortening the time frame identified in the compensation manual. Notification to the more than 5,000 employees began at the site level last week. All employees are eligible to participate in the second period which begins Nov. 20.
