Teen charged in hit-and-run case

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Division have charged Gustavo Diaz, 19, with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an automotive-pedestrian incident that injured a 12-year-old boy.

The vehicle struck the boy at around 7 p.m. Sunday on Seven Mile Lane near Sunny Drive and the driver refused to stop and render aid to the boy, according to initial reports. The child suffered serious injuries and was taken by emergency medical services to Memorial Hermann Hospital - Texas Medical Center in critical condition. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

Investigators determine that the boy was standing on the hood of a black Ford Crown Victoria owned by Diaz, who had started the vehicle and drove down the street with the boy holding on to the hood. The boy yelled at Diaz to stop the car, but investigators say Diaz refused.

When Diaz turned the Crown Victoria onto Sunny Drive, the boy fell off the car and was run over. Diaz initially reported to 911 dispatchers that an an unknown vehicle struck the boy and never stopped. He is jail on $30,000 bond and he is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 17.
