Tax Free Weekend exemptions, exclusions, and safety

School is about start in about two weeks for local schools. Before the first bell rings, children are going to need school supplies, and that's where the Tax Free Weekend comes in.

It starts Friday, August 11, and lasts through Sunday, August 13.

During the state holiday, you won't have to pay sales tax for most clothes, footwear, school supplies and backpacks that are priced under $100. The tax exemption also includes items sold online or on the phone.

There are some exceptions. Accessories, athletic wear, watches, umbrellas, wallets, and handbags are not tax exempt.

While shopping, law enforcement have some tips to stay safe:

Make sure to put your purchases in your trunk before arriving at your next shopping destination.

Park close to the store.

Lock your car door.

Watch your surroundings.

Avoid using cash.

Try to shop only during daylight hours.

Don’t leave anything in sight in your vehicle.
