Son killed while protecting mom during Subway robbery attempt

- An 18-year-old Chavez High School student was shot and killed Wednesday night, as he tried to protect his mom during a robbery attempt at a Subway restaurant where they both worked.

Houston police say when the gunman took aim, the son, Javier Flores, jumped right in between the gunman and his mother, and the 18-year-old was fatally shot in the neck.

Friends, family, neighbors, teachers--everyone, is calling Javier Flores a hero for stepping in front of a loaded gun to save his mother's life.

"He pushed his mom to the side, he pulled his mom to the side because the guy was pointing a gun at her face," said Carlos Vasquez.

Carlos Vasquez is the father of the brave young man that lost his life to a pointless act of violence Wednesday night.

"He always backed up his family, he always backed up his friends, don't matter what it was he always had his hand right there to help people, " Vasquez said.

Police say the suspects robbed another Subway  restaurant after shooting Flores, and police were able to pull surveillance video from that location.

Police are searching for two suspects described as two black males, 16 to 20 years old, driving a tan or gold 4-door sedan. Police released a composite sketch of the shooting suspect who is described as a black male, 5'10", with a slim build. Anyone with information is asked to call HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600. Crime Stoppers has raised the reward for these men to $30,000.

"They out there in the streets, you know, y'all gonna pay for it, I mean if the law don't find you we gonna find a way, the world is big but at the same time it's all," Vasquez said.

Flores would have graduated in May. Helping him, Robert Myers, his third period communications teacher, who says he will be sorely missed.

"I was not surprised when they said he stepped in front of the gun to take the bullet for his mom, I just knew that that's something he would do. Caring giving kind, it was really sad in class today," Myers said.
