It’s like time stood still for the apartment complex where sheriff’s deputy Edd Williams was working an off-duty security job on January 12, 1974. The Victoria Manor Apartments looks like it did 42 years ago.
Williams was hired by the complex after prior robberies.
“Back in the early 70’s people dealt more in cash, than they did in checks and credit cards,” said Harris County cold case detective Robert Minchew.
Williams was in civilian clothes detectives say when these two men entered the office posing as potential new tenants.
“There was a backroom to the office they made everybody go in there,” Minchew said. “When they saw deputy Williams' badge or gun, they tried to fight or resist and grabbed one of their guns, and one of them stepped back and fired one time.”
“It’s kind of hurtful to have that taken away from you,” said Yancy Williams who was just 6 years old when his father was gunned down.
“It means a lot to me that they’re actually opening up this case again and trying to resolve this,” Williams said.
Deputy Williams slaying in 1974 is just one of only two unsolved murders of Harris County Sheriff’s deputies in recent memory. The other is the 1991 slaying of deputy Roxanne Allee.
She was off duty and shopping at Greenspoint Mall when she was abducted and murdered.
“We work that a lot just haven’t been able to file charges in it,” Minchew said. “But we look at it all the time.”
Grimes County Sheriff Donald Sowell was a Harris County deputy in 1974 and worked with Williams.
Here’s what he would advise Williams’ killers to do.
“I would say father time and your conscience need to work on you,” Sowell said. “You need to look at your Lord and say I need to do the right thing,”
